Default thumbnails in websites

I have a question.

How do websites with 100s of pictures create hyperlinks to the actual
picture for all the thumbnails?

I'm sure they are not manually entering each hyperlink since that would be
time consuming if a site contains 100s or 1000s of pictures.

TIA

Usually, Photoshop can create galleries such as the ones you are
talking about. With the new CS3 for Dreamweaver you can integrate the
photogallery. You can also use 3rd part programs such as Jalbum or
even flash gallerys to do what your talking about. Behaivors is
another way but that involves linking etc as you questioned about.

There are server side scripts and programs that will create thumbnail images
for larger files. Both ASP and PHP have scripts available for creating
thumbnails on the fly of images in a directory.
