Default question about spacer files

I am new to Dreamweaver but have a good understanding how it works.

I'm starting a website using a template, setting my transparancy to 50%,
drawing a table, drawing cells around images and text, then inserting my
images.

Unfortunately I need to resize my images which isn't a big deal.

My question is: how does Dreamweaver know there are spaces between empty
sections of the page and occupied cells?

If I sliced a picture in FireWorks it would create a list of pictures some
with spacers.

TIA
