In FreeHand, you can use a method very similar to the Flash tutorial.

I would first place a horizontal and vertical guide to use as center. Snap
to guides on.

With polygon tool draw the starburst from intersection of guides.

With ellipse tool Shift+Opt+Drag from intersection of guides to make circles
already centered with polygon.

Use the union, intersection and punch operations to combine elements.

thanks judy! i really like what you wrote about freehand...i've been using
freehand for years and love it.

using the tips above, i made a fun animated gear mesh to teach children about
mechanisms.
