Off and on we've talked about various 3rd party apps that might be an option
for vector illustration. Most aren't really at the same level as any Adobe product, and I doubt this one is, either, but thought I'd add it to the mix: http://software.viva.de/english/prod...aDesigner/354/ It's not open source, but is free. Has anyone played with it? -Darrel |

For all platforms 2. Unique licencing model 3. International use 4. Wide user spectrum 5. Compatibility 6. Long tradition 7. Complete supplier VIVA Where is the design? Jukka |

Yes, "convincing reasons" are really funny and frivolous.
After this very informative list I was compelled to see what is so convincing and I have download it. No, I didn't install it because I saw in datasheet that this is no alternative to Freehand but to Quark and InDesign. It seems that it is not so rudimentary application like the "convincing reasons" reveal. Still, this is not for us. But Darrel, if you want decent application that is very likely to be soon something comparable to Freehand that is XaraXtreme. It's the only good alternative I found among many vector applications I've tried, it is amazingly fast with realtime effects and has multipage. |

I was just going to mention Xara - and Corel does cross my mind.[/q] Neither of which are currently Mac Os X compatible if thats a requirement. Corel acutally is not as bad as people may think. It now feels very much like an art tool. I bought version 12 when Corel offered a $99 sidegrade path from Freehand and I use it. My only beef with it besides Mac OS X compatibility (I wanna Mac for my next computer) is the multipages are all the same size. I wonder if people realize just how handy Freehand approach to pages and multipages are? I love to create a web look, and different banner ad sizes all in the same file. As one example. I also love the object approach to Freehand pages. Sigh.. Cheers, Jeremy |

And after digging it seems Corel can in fact have different pages sizes and orientations Veryhandly! Its not as friendly to use as Freehand, but you go to the document settings and enable the resize page only option and that seems to do it. Now if only Corel would offer the Mac version of Corel Draw back this could be a serious option to the Adobe toolset. I have to admit however that I have begun "project trying illustrator" again to see if Illustrator and I can get along. All previous attempts at "project trying illustrator" have met with utter failure. Sigh... Cheers, |
