Hi all,
I am trying to import an Illustrator file, a logo, into a Freehand document to create a lettehead for printing. It is an .eps in CMYK mode. I have checked the "embed" box in preferences. When I place the imported file onto the FH document, it appears as a box with an "X" through it. And when I print it, that's also exaclty what prints - a box with an "X" through it. Am I missing something or doing something wrong? Please HELP! Thank you in advance! -Mike |

FreeHand does not have a PostScript interpreter, so cannot interpret most flavours of EPS (Encapsulated PostScript). I can only assume that your printer does not have a PostsScript interpreter. If you had printed the document to a PostScript printer, then the printer would interpret the EPS data and print it correctly. If you have Illustrator, open the EPS file, save as Illustrator 8, and open that in FreeHand. Judy Arndt |

Judy,
Thanks, I appreciate your reply. I know what you're saying but I'm afraid I don't understand because FH can export an .eps file so why can't it import/open one? Wouldn't it need the eps interpreter to export an eps? Plus, in the import dialogue box there is an option for importing .eps files as one of the file types. Why would that be there if it can't open the filetype? And, the help section has a topic on importing all filetypes, including eps, which I did what it suggested. I am using Freehand MX, does that make a difference? I am still confused . . . sorry, and I don't have Illustrator. Thx, -Mike |

Mike, I don't blame you for being frustrated. FH Help files are not very helpful on this subject. I would go so far as to say they are misleading. You can import and place any EPS file into a FH file, for output to a Postscript printer or Postscript interpreter such as Acrobat Pro/Distiller. If the EPS was written with a preview for your operating system, you will be able to see to position the file correctly. You can open as editable, EPS files in the Illustrator 8 EPS format and earlier. After AI8, Adobe introduced transparency and other refinements to the Adobe Postscript file format. Because FH was developed first by Aldus and then by Macromedia, it never owned rights to Adobe Postscript. I guess it wasn't worth Macromedia's time and effort to keep up with all the changes and try to accurately translate EPS objects into editable FH objects. They turned their focus to Flash and web development. Most long-time FH users keep a copy of Illustrator around to open EPS and PDF files. Judy Arndt |
