I've been expanding on the validation stuff recently (making a field ignore
validation if a field is left empty when it loses focus, but still working when
it gets submitted, stuff like that). In the course of my work, I've added the
ability to change the background of invalid fields. Now, with the backgrounds
acting as highlight, I'd like to be able to disable the outlines that pop up.
Has anybody seen a way to do that?

Okay, here's what I ended up doing. I'm going to suppress Events on the validate call, and fake an error tooltip using the string returned in the ResultEvent returned by the validate call.
