Default HTML Text, asfunction, and JAWS Screen Reader

I have an app that builds a menu using dynamic text with HTML formatting to
create a menu. The HTML contains anchor links that have asfunction's in them
to activation AS functions.

The problem is that JAWS will read the menu out loud like it is regular text,
but I can't seem to select or go to the links on the menu using JAWS. Pressing
"F" in JAWS just skips over the menu entirely - it treats it link regular text
and ignores the embedded links. Is there a trick to doing this?
