May be my limited knowledge can be of some help to you.

It means u want it to reload the same current page right ?
without form submission the database update wont happen.
and after update where should the page go so we need a redirect.
but if u want to redirect to the same page u can set it in the transaction behavior. It will work.

Next point i believe u r trying to call AJAX client side script from the server side behavior it wont work.

U can redirect the page to the same page.. if u r updating a record.

and if u don't want to submit and just first do validation or client side re validate..
then...

u can write a small Java script function in the HEAD of the page. which calls all these list of refresh functions for individual elements of page.
