I'm trying to upload a streaming flash video in Dreamweaver and can't figure
out what they want in the dialog box. Under server URI, it asks for server
name, app name and instance name to be placed in this order:

rtmp://myserver/myapp/myinstance

I have obtained the server name but are not sure what is meant by "my app" and
"my instance." Also, in the next box, it asks for the "stream name." Is that
the URL or simply what I call the video?

The Help explanation does not explain these at all. I would appreciate any
help anyone can give me. I'm new to the Dreamweaver forum.

Are you running Flash Media Server (FMS) from your server or are you
getting it from a 3rd party? I ask because I have limited experience
with using FMS (formerly Flash Comm Server) via influxis.com.

If from a 3rd party such as influxis.com, then I suggest using their
help system.

I'll give you my experience with influxis.com anyway. If you're
using your own or a different FMS, you can simply ignore the rest of
this reply.

With the interface provided by influxis, I created an "application",
let's call it myapp for this reply. This process automatically created
a main.asc and some sub folders under my account (myserver for this
reply). As seen from their "File Admin" section (or SFTP) the folders
are:

myapp
myapp/main.asc
myapp/streams
myapp/streams/_definst_

I upload all .flv files into the _definst_ folder as created. Let's say
I uploaded myVideo.flv

myapp/streams/_definst_/myVideo.flv

In Flash (I haven't tried using DW directly), I set the FLVPlayback
Component path to:

rtmp://myserver/myapp/myVideo

where myserver is my account name at Influxis, myapp is as I created it
via their interface, and myVideo is the uploaded .flv file.

Note that I do not include the .flv extension and I do not mention
streams or _definst_ in that path.

Again, this may simply be how Influxis has set up their FMS. I have
never tried setting up FMS on any of our servers, so YMMV. And, again,
I set this path within Flash's FLVPlayback component.

Next time I'm on my DW box, I'll take a peak at how DW inserts such a
video player. I am curious about it.

Thanks for your in-depth reply. My server is GoDaddy. A rep there told me that
I can stream video through GoDaddy, that they are a flash media server.
However, he couldn't supply me with any details or instructions, and I'm not
sure that he really sure that he knew what I (and he) was talking about.

I checked out a couple Flash instruction books at the bookstore last night,
and I realized that my daughter, who has the Flash software, might not have set
the Deployment to "Stream for flash video server." So we'll try that again and
I'll try setting up a playback component path as you described in your
instructions. Then I'll try uploading it again and see how it goes.

That gives me serious doubt that they actually do have FMS. If they
did, the rep could surely have pointed you to the instructions. I have
seen hosts claim streaming Flash video, but when taken to task, they
eventually admit that they "support flash .flv video" - meaning
progressive video in Flash/Dreamweaver terms.

Wow, but that godaddy.com is one mess of a site to navigate!

I found this in a FAQ about shared hosting:

Which indicates NO for shared hosting. You may want to dig through
their FAQ pages a little deeper - especially if you have some other
hosting plan with them.
