Default Conditional Form Fields

I have a registration form with a dynamic List/Menu based on Recordset1
what I am trying to do is to get a text box to conditionally appear if
Recordset2 is not empty
Recordset2 is based on the value of the List/menu recordset and whether
another field for that record is True or False (so I cannot use just the value
of the List/Menu)
so after the List/menu has been selected Recordset2 may or may not have data
I have tried to resubmit the form onchange of the List/Menu (with java) but
this fails as I submit the whole form with mandatory and duplicate field checks
Please - how do I get Recordset2 to requery after someone selects the
List/menu or is there another way I haven't thought of.
Any suggestions/pointers much appreciated
