I want to use Contribute to edit a site that is password protected via
existence of a cookie. However, it does not appear to work as it keeps asking
for the login everytime I want to access a page. Can this be done in
Contribute? If not, I certainly think this should be included in a future
release.

I think you should check the cookie settings of your IE browser and adjust them to make it work properly.
